Pirates' defense clamps down on Chargers

CYPRESS -- With an impressive 39-dig performance from sophomore libero Carina Perez, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball remained unbeaten with a four-set win at Cypress College on Friday night.

Sierra Brown led the offense with 17 kills, while Danyelle Brown added 13 and Lehua Alama-Jordan chipped in 12 in OCC's 25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 27-25 win over the Chargers.

But the big story was the defense of the Pirates (7-0, 1-0 in Orange Empire Conference), who also picked up 21 digs from Danyelle Brown and 17 digs (and 42 assists) from setter Danielle Boyette.

The 39 digs by Perez is the third-most in a single match in OCC history. Perez holds the all-time mark of 44, set last year, while Nicole Powers had 43 digs in a match back in 2004.

The loss snaps a nine-match win streak to start the season for the Chargers (9-1, 0-1).

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana College (7 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against Fullerton College (6 p.m.).
