Pirates topple Glendale; will host Santa Monica for SoCal title

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team picked up an impressive win on Tuesday, topping Glendale College, 5-2, to advance to the finals of the Southern California Dual Team Tennis Regional Championships.

The second-seeded Pirates (17-2, winners of 10 straight) will host No. 4 Santa Monica (14-3) on Saturday (time to be determined) for the Southern California title and a trip to the State Championship finals at the Ojai Tournament on April 26. The Corsairs upset top-seeded Irvine Valley on Tuesday, 5-3.

Doubles play started the competition and at No. 1, Coast picked up a HUGE win from the duo of Clarisa Colling and Karen Trinh, who outlasted Tsukimi Ono and Veronika Galstyan, 9-7. Glendale won at No. 2 doubles, but the OCC duo of JoAnn Taylor and Samantha Newhall earned a hard-fought 8-6 win over Melonti Emmanouilidi and Aleya Mendez.

With a 2-1 lead heading into singles, Coast didn't waste any time and earned straight-set wins at the top of the lineup as Colling (6-3, 7-5), Trinh (6-0, 6-3) and Cecilia Arzaga (7-5, 6-0) gave the Pirates the points they needed to advance to the Southern California Regional finals.

The winner of Saturday's match will face the winner of the Northern California Regional finals, which is between No. 1 De Anza (13-1) and No. 3 Canada (13-4).
