Santiago Canyon wins fourth state title

Santiago Canyon College won the California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) state championship with a 2-0 victory over San Diego Mesa College on Sunday in Cupertino, California.  It was the second straight title for SCC and the fourth in the history of the program.

Santiago Canyon entered the season winning 15 straight Orange Empire Conference championships, a streak that came to an end in 2019 when Cypress ended the streak in November. The Hawks started another, winning a second straight state championship.

Santiago Canyon outplayed San Diego Mesa from start-to-finish, outshooting the Olympians 24-3 with an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.  It took the Hawks some time to get on the board, but when they did they quickly put the game out of reach with a second goal.

Santiago Canyon scored in the 58th minute when Tara Hansel headed in a pass from Brianna Diaz for her ninth goal of the season.  Just 14 minutes later, Ashley Roskelly did the same off a pass from Diaz as the Hawks grabbed a 2-0 with under 20 minutes remaining.   It was Roskelly's eighth goal of the season.   From that point forward the Santiago Canyon defense did its thing, frustrating the Mesa offensive attack while giving the Olympians their second loss of the season.

Santiago Canyon finished the season 18-3-3 overall, winning games against Santa Ana, Chaffey, Santa Barbara, San Joaquin Delta and San Diego Mesa in the playoffs.  The Hawks also won state championships in 2018, 2009 and 2006.
