Santiago Canyon College Women's Soccer Returns to State Finals

Santiago Canyon College Women's Soccer Returns to State Finals

On the strength of their 2-0 win over San Francisco City College on Friday, Santiago Canyon College (21-1-2) has earned another shot at winning a CCCAA State Championship. The Hawks, seeded #2 in Southern California, will take on #1-seeded Cerritos College at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. Sunday's final will be a rematch of last year's state championship game, won by the Falcons, 2-0.

After a scoreless first half, Santiago Canyon scored both of their goals within five minutes, with the first coming off the foot of Jenny Konishi on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. The goal convinced the Hawks that they could penetrate the Rams (19-3-2) defense and went on the attack. It was Konishi who had a direct hand in the second tally, as she sent a beautiful crossing pass to Sam Jones, who finished off the play with her 14th goal of the season.

With four saves and a steady defense in front of her, Crystal Allen earned her 10th shutout of the season, while both teams posted 10 shots in the game. San Francisco boasted 32-goal scorer Paloma Zermeno, who took four shots, but was kept off the scoreboard.
