2015 women's golf season gets underway

The 2015 Orange Empire Conference women's golf season got underway this week at a conference-wide event hosted by Mt. San Jacinto College on the Soboba Springs Country Club course.

The new season started in similar fashion to how the 2014 season ended, with conference and state champion College of the Desert leading the way.  The Roadrunners posted a four-person team score of 331 to run away from Irvine Valley (351), Palomar (354), Mt. San Antonio (358) and the rest of the OEC pack.

Desert sophomore Fumika Matsumoto, last year's conference MVP, had some competition on the course in the opening event.  Teammate Yi Chen Tsai carded a 77 to earn medalist honors while Matsumoto was a stroke back at 78 along with Irvine Valley sophomore Hyerin Kim.  Kim is a transfer from Barton Community College in Kansas.

Those were the only players to score in the 70's on the par-72 course, as IVC sophomore Rebecca Peng (pictured) carded an 81 to lead a group of 10 players posting scores in the 80's.

The OEC will meet again on Wednesday, September 9, as Cuyamaca College hosts a conference match on the Sycuan Golf Resort course in El Cajon.
