Cypress, Santiago Canyon to Represent South at State Finals

The Orange Empire Conference is sending both representatives from the south to the 2016 CCCAA Softball State Championships at Bakersfield College this Friday, May 20 to Sunday, May 22. The top-seeded Cypress College Chargers will take on Sacramento City College, the #3-seed in Northern California, while #2 Santiago Canyon College will take on the North's #1-seed, College of San Mateo.

Cypress swept its Super Regional this past weekend with an opening 5-0 win over OEC rival Fullerton College before blanking Cerritos College 4-0. The Chargers used a walk-off single by Jezz Portillo in their final game, a 3-2 win over Palomar College.

In Santiago Canyon's Super Regional, the Hawks were forced to a winner-take-all game seven against Mt. San Antonio College. The weekend started with an 18-0 victory for Santiago Canyon over Santa Barbara City College before the Hawks shut out Mt. SAC 2-0 to advance to the final day.

Needing just one win to advance, the Hawks were unable to close out the series as Mt. SAC forced the final game with a 10-2 victory. However, with a trip to Bakersfield on the line, Santiago Canyon sealed the deal with a 6-1 win in their third-straight game against Mt. SAC.
