Pirates Roll Past Rio Hondo, Palomar to Improve to 3-0

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College sand volleyball team improved to 3-0 for the season after earning a pair of wins against Rio Hondo and Palomar on Friday afternoon.

In their opening match, the Pirates shut out Rio Hondo, 5-0, before taking on Palomar in the second match and topping the Comets, 4-1.

Against the Roadrunners, Coast picked up straight-set wins by Danielle Boyette and Sierra Brown (21-18, 21-9), Shayna Johnson and Alexa Herrera (21-18, 21-15),Danyelle Brown and Lehua Alama-Jordan (21-5, 21-10) and Megan Rawlings and Aubrea Tuell (22-20, 21-11). The team of Alyssa Assayag and Kasse-Ann Dela Cruz needed three sets, but still prevailed, 21-12, 11-21, 15-9.

Against the Comets, Boyette/S. Brown (23-21, 21-18), Johnson/Herrera (21-14, 21-18), D. Brown/Alama-Jordan (21-16, 21-17) and Assayag/Dela Cruz (21-12, 24-22) all earned victories for the Pirates.

Coast will return to the Newland Beach Volleyball Courts on Friday for an Orange Empire Conference double-header with Santa Ana (12 p.m.) and Cypress (1 p.m.).
