Men's Soccer: GWC’s Vargas earns MVP honors to top All-Orange Empire Conference

Golden West College sophomore defender Juan Vargas earned Most Valuable Player honors to cap off the 2018 All-Orange Empire Conference Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches at their postseason meeting.

Vargas, a 6-foot-1, 172-pound right back out of Santiago High School, was a dominant two-way player for the Rustlers, who not only held down the GWC defense, he also led the team with 10 goals and 23 points, while playing in 19-of-20 matches.

Fullerton College head coach Greg Aviles was named Coach of the Year after leading his Hornets to the OEC conference title, the team's first conference title since 1992 and just the third in team history (1981).

Joining Aviles is a quartet of Hornet players, who earned first-team honors – C.J. Wood, Danny Abrego-Fulton, Cesar Coronado and Steve Perez. Abrego-Fulton had a team-best nine goals for the Hornets, while Perez was tops in the OEC with 10 assists. Wood and Coronado helped anchor a FC defense that allowed just five goals in OEC play and 11 for the entire season.
