Saddleback (31-2) enters the tournament as the top seed from Southern California after defeating Los Angeles Pierce College, Mt. Cañada (24-6) enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed from Northern California after defeating Diablo Valley College, San Jose City College and College of Marin in the Northern California Regional Playoffs.  The Colts finished in third place in the Coast Conference North Division and last made it to the semifinals in 1994, never making it to a championship game.

The two programs have conflicting styles, as Cañada features one of the higher powered offenses in the state and Saddleback one of the stingiest defenses.  The Colts rank No. 4 in the state in total points (83.9) while the Gauchos are No. 2 in defensive points allowed (56.2).  Cañada has scored over 100 points on five occasions this season while Saddleback has surrendered 60-or-less, 19 times.

Cañada has a balanced attack with four players averaging in double-figures for the year led by forward Rhondell Goodwin (17.0).  He is joined by guards Crisshawn Clark (14.7) and Israel Hakim (pictured left, 12.2) for one of the better backcourts in the state.  Forward Manny Martin is the fourth option on offense, scoring 11.5 points-per-game while leading the team in rebounding (9.7).
