BASEBALL: HORNETS OVER OLYMPIANS

Fullerton earned a 2-0 start to the season after beating San Diego Mesa 8-4 at home on Saturday.

The Olympians jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Hornets took over the ball game with a six-run explosion in the 2nd inning. FC right fielder Marco Rivera lit the fire hitting a single to center field. CF David Miranda then singled through the right side and SS Christian Prado laid down bunt single to load the bases. LF John Orlando worked the count for a walk which forced Rivera across home plate. 2B Laine Huffman singled through the left side scoring Miranda. DH Justin Row grounded to short scoring Prado. Catcher Julio Rivera singled through the left side and Orlando sprinted home. 1B Riley Roberts grounded out to short allowing Huffman to score. 3B Trent Hammond stepped up to the plate looking to add more runs and then ripped a double to left field scoring Rivera.

Mesa tried to climb back in the game scoring runs in the 5th and 6th innings, but the Hornets ended any threat grabbing those runs back in the 8th inning. Huffman's single through the left side of the field gave Orlando the chance to showcase his speed from second as he rounded home. Huffman scored on a wild pitch.

Starting pitcher Kyle Lazcano (1-0) took the win going 5 innings with 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts, and 4 walks. Reliever Ryon Martinez had 1 earned run with 3 hits allowed. Parker Merritt, Gordon Cardenas, and Randall Ortiz combined for 0 earned runs, no hits, and 1 strikeout.
