Women’s Soccer Ties Santiago Canyon, 1-1

Women’s Soccer Ties Santiago Canyon, 1-1
Orange – The Cypress women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with the No. 1 team in the state, Santiago Canyon on Friday afternoon. The Chargers remain unbeaten and are now 8-0-4 on the year and 5-0-3 in conference play. Santiago Canyon's record is now 9-0-2 and 6-0-1 in OEC games.

Cypress missed a couple of chances early on from Liz Gutierrez and Karla Lopez, but Lopez was able to break through with the first goal of the game on a well-played diagonal ball from Jade Perez, which put Lopez behind a flat Hawks defense. The Chargers continued to press the Santiago defense into many mistakes, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunities. The Hawks had a solid chance to score late in the first half, but the shot sailed over the goal.

In the second half, Santiago came out with a lot of energy and pressed the Charger defense as Taylor Hollywood capitalized on a soft foul against Cypress from about 20 years out to even the score in the 52nd minute. The Hawks had the momentum early in the second half, but the Chargers took it back and continued to have their way with Santiago on its back line. A big save by the Hawks keeper on a shot by Perez kept the game tied.

Lopez,  Gutierrez, Jackie Gomez and  Michaila Martin all had chances in the final minutes of the match to hit the game winner on what would have been a well-deserved win for the Chargers.

The women have just one game next week – a rivalry match with Fullerton on Friday, Oct. 17 at 3:00 pm. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men (1:00 pm) in which both teams will be playing to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Cypress will be charging admission ($5/adults; $2/seniors & kids; Cypress students free with valid ID), with all proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen Orange County Chapter.
