Women’s Soccer Season Comes to a Close at Cerritos

Cerritos – The sixth-seed Cypress Charger women's soccer team (15-4-4) saw its season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the team fell to second-seeded Cerritos (22-1-0) in the third round of the SoCal Regional.

Cypress' 15 wins this season was the most for the team since 2012, when it went 16-3-3.

All of the scoring action came in the second half as both teams battled to a 0-0 draw in the first 45 minutes of play. Cerritos struck first in the second half, scoring in the 55th minute when Jill Messersmith sent a shot in to the corner post of the goal. The Chargers answered with the equalizer a few minutes later when Jackie Gomez was taken down in the box and Cypress was awarded a penalty kick. For the second consecutive game, Kendra Serrano was called upon to take the kick and she converted to tie the game at one all.

With the game knotted at 1-1, it seemed like overtime was on the horizon, but Cerritos found the back of the net in stoppage time to win the game and send the Falcons to the State Championship.
