LANCASTER - For the first three innings it was like two heavyweight boxers going toe to toe in the center of the ring when the Marauder softball team faced off against Riverside City College.
After three complete innings, AVC 12, RCC 11.
Unfortunately for the Marauders there were four more innings to play and the Tigers took advantage of each one by scoring seven more total runs and walking away with an 18-12 victory over AVC, Tuesday afternoon.
AVC's Toni Hutnick was 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI, including a monstrous home run and a double, however, it was not enough as the Marauders were held scoreless the final four innings. Dolly Stevens, Erica Serfoss and Justeene Tamayo each collected three hits for AVC, which had 17 total hits.
Every player for the Tigers, which are averaging 10 runs per game this season, had at least one hit and all but one player each had an RBI. Riverside pounded out 21 hits against AVC pitching. Seven of the nine Tigers' hitters had multiple hits.
Naelyse Garcia pitched all seven innings for the Marauders, but she didn't get much help from her defense as it committed five errors. Garcia gave up 21 hits and 18 runs, however, only 11 of those were earned.
"We definitely came to hit today, but our defense lets us down," Marauders head coach Cindy Vargas said. "We faced a very good hitting team and couldn't afford to make mistakes."
