Baseball team beats Pasadena City again

Irvine Valley's baseball team beat Pasadena City for the second time this week, topping the Lancers, 4-2, in a nonconference game Thursday at IVC.

The Lasers defeated Pasadena City, 5-3, earlier on Tuesday in Pasadena.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jesus Meza earned the win, throwing eight strong innings. He gave up two runs on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

Freshman lefty Buddy Brouwer pitched a shutout ninth inning to pick up the save.

Irvine Valley led the entire way.

The Lasers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Sophomore second baseman Dallas Porter reached on an error and then stole second base. Freshman shortstop Zach Vittetow singled up the middle to move Porter to third.

Porter then scored on a wild pitch by Pasadena City starting pitcher Brian Cuiriz.

Later in the inning, sophomore designated hitter Teddy Steffel hit a single to left center to score sophomore left fielder Matt Harris.

IVC added a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Harris.

Pasadena City (4-28) scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 3-2 game.

The Lasers came right back with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman catcher Ben DePerry's squeeze bunt brought in Steffel.

IVC finished with seven hits in the game. Steffel led the way, going 2 for 3 with one RBI. Harris was 1 for 4 with a RBI.

The Lasers, who improved their record to 10-24, end the regular season next week back in Orange Empire Conference action. Irvine Valley hosts Fullerton on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and then the Lasers play at Fullerton next Thursday.
