The American River College women's volleyball team stumbled Saturday at the state championships, dropping all three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-15) to undefeated Irving Valley.
The Beavers, who had won 19 matches in a row, must defeat Grossmont this morning to continue in the double-elimination California Community College Athletic Association tournament at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
Annie Mitchern led the victorious Lasers (24-0) with 14 points and 11 kills. Nicole Hareland had 10 points and nine kills for ARC, which dropped to 26-4.
In the four-team tournament's first match, Grossmont fell to Cabrillo, keeping the Seahawks undefeated. The Griffins, who won only the second set, slipped to 28-4. The match was highlighted by Cabrillo freshman outside hitter Kelsey Shaver setting a state championship-match record for most kills by a North Region player with 31.
Saturday's play concluded with the winners, Cabrillo and Irving Valley, squaring off. The loser of that match will play the winner of this morning's elimination game between ARC and Grossmont.
