Pirates refuse to quit, top Rustlers in 10

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- It was another battle between the Orange Coast College baseball team and the neighbors up the 405 freeway -- Golden West College -- and in the end, the Pirates overcame losing a late lead and claimed a 6-5, 10-inning win over the Rustlers on Thursday at Fred Hoover Field.

Dylan Krause's 10th-inning, RBI single plated Zach Leite with the winning run and the Pirates (16-23, 10-10 in the Orange Empire Conference) held off the OEC-champion Rustlers (27-12, 14-6) in bottom of the frame for the thrilling victory.

Owen Wessel went 3-for-5, including a home run, with two runs scored and an RBI for Coast, while Kanan Treece slugged a two-run home run to add to the OCC firepower.

OCC starter Jack Ross pitched another solid game, allowing just two runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts over six innings of work. He left the game with Coast in front, 5-2, but the Rustlers aren't the OEC champs for nothing.

GWC pushed across two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to tie the score and had an excellent opportunity to win the game in regulation, with the winning run on third base and only one out. But Jackson Gilles buckled down and forced a pop out to shortstop Taylor Takata and struck out the next batter to force extras.

In the 10th, Coast had a runner on second with nobody out and later, the bases loaded with one out, but after a shallow fly ball didn't score the go-ahead run, Krause stepped up with his biggest hit of the season, scoring Leite from third to put OCC ahead, 6-5.

GWC tried another comeback attempt and after a double and walk had runners on first and second, relief pitcher Parker King retired the final Rustler batter on a foul out to catcher J.T. Crabbe to end the game.

The Pirates and Rustlers will wrap up the regular season at OCC's John Altobelli Park on Friday, beginning at 1 p.m.
