Pirates come up short to Citrus, 5-4

COSTA MESA -- Tough battle at the OCC Softball Complex between host Orange Coast College and visiting Citrus College, but in the end, it was the Owls who pulled out a 5-4 win over the host Pirates on Thursday.

The Pirates (4-2), ranked No. 4 in Southern California and No. 10 in the state, pushed the Owls (7-4) to the edge in the bottom of the seventh inning as they pulled to within a run with two runs and had the tying and winning runs on base with just one out.

But, much like most of the game, the Pirates just couldn't get that "big hit" when they needed it most, leaving both runners stranded to end the game. Coast left eight total on the basepaths for the afternoon.

Isabel McElroy went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jasmyn Morales added a double and two runs scored for Coast. Natalie Lowthers added two hits and two RBI.

Pitcher Ruby Fidge battled her heart out for a full seven innings and held the Owls to just three earned runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.

OCC's next game will take place on Tuesday at home against Pasadena City College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
