Pirates preserve 1-0 win over Falcons in home opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team kicked off its 2024 home schedule the right way as the Pirates pulled out a 1-0 win over visiting Cerritos College on Wednesday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Sophomore righty Angela Whitmer pitched a four-hit, complete-game shutout and a solo home run off the bat of Natalie Lowthers proved to be the difference-maker for the Pirates (1-1).

Whitmer pounded the strike zone all afternoon against the Falcons (2-1). She allowed just four hits, struck out six and walked ZERO.

Lowthers' blast came in the bottom of the second inning off of Cerritos hurler Reanna Carranza (2-1), who pitched well enough to win as well. The Falcons' righty went the distance and held the Pirates to one run on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Lowthers, Jasmyn Morales, Melissa Hanson and Jasmyn Morales each had two hits for the Pirates.

Helping out Whitmer's cause, the Pirate defense made all of the plays behind her for an error-free afternoon.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 8 against Pasadena City College, beginning at 3 p.m.
