Women's Volleyball: Rio Hondo splits matches at home quad

Rio Hondo College women's volleyball came away with a split on Friday as the Roadrunners defeated Santa Ana College 3-1 and suffered a 3-1 loss to Saddleback College in non-conference action in Whittier. Rio Hondo's overall record now stands at 5-4 as the Roadrunners head into South Coast Conference play.

Rio Hondo opened the day with a 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Santa Ana. Michelle Rosas paced the offense in the win with 11 kills and also totaled four blocks. Carleigh Cruz led Rio Hondo with 13 digs while Haley Brownwood had a team-high 23 assists. Jacqueline Chaidez also had a good match as she chipped in with seven kills and seven digs. Victoria Martinez and Michelle Hawkins contributed six kills each.

The afternoon match was a reversal of the morning for the Roadrunners as they took the opening set 28-26 against Saddleback but fell 25-22, 25-11, and 25-16 to snap their four-match winning streak. Hawkins led Rio Hondo with eight kills while Martinez and Rosas added seven kills each. Cruz once again led the backline with 11 digs to go with 12 assists and Brownwood had a team-high 15 assists.

Rio Hondo returns to action on September 23 at 6 p.m. when the Roadrunners host Pasadena City College to open up their 2016 South Coast Conference schedule.
