Santa Barbara City College posted a dominating 18-1 softball win over Southwestern on Saturday, then dropped a 7-2 decision to Golden West on the second day of the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach.
The Vaqueros (11-5) broke open a 3-1 game vs. Southwestern (12-7-1) with nine runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth. The game was called after five innings by the eight-run rule. Santa Barbara won its fourth straight and snapped the Jaguars' six-game win streak.
The 18 runs and 15 hits were season highs for the Vaqueros.
Maggie Jo Jackson went 4-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the second inning. Catcher Monica Salas was also 4-4 with four runs batted in. The former Dos Pueblos High standout hit her first college homer, a three-run blast in the fifth, and raised her team-high batting average to .500.
Leadoff hitter Sydney Townes was 3-5 with a triple while Alyssa-Rae Jewell went 2-3 and scored three runs. Alexa Sorensen came off the bench to go 2-3 with two RBIs and three runs. The Vaqueros sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth frame, scoring nine runs on nine hits. Rebecca Pullen (5-2) pitched a five-hitter and the Vaqueros benefitted from eight Southwestern errors that led to seven unearned runs.
Madison McNamee struck out a season-high nine in the nightcap vs. Golden West but the offense was held to five hits. The Rustlers (4-12) collected nine hits.
The Vaqueros are 3-1 in the tourney and will play their fifth and final game on Sunday when they take on San Bernardino Valley at 9 a.m.
