Volleyball downs Golden West, 3-1

Cypress – The women's volleyball team defeated Golden West on Friday evening in four games (25-23, 25-22, 26-28, 25-14) to improve to 10-1 on the season and 2-1 in OEC matches. Golden West falls to 9-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.

 

Three players tallied double-digit kills as Lindsay Ray lead the way with 19. Makayla Taylor added 16 (.519 hitting percentage), while Ivana Escobedo had 10. Taylor also had a huge night digging the ball, tallying a team-high 30. Ave Mikaele was right behind Taylor with 23 digs, while Ray (15), Cassidy Johnson (14) and Kim Calinawan (10) also had double-digit digs.

 

Golden West led for the majority of the first set until the Chargers were able to tie the game at 17 all. Cypress took its first lead of the game at 23-22 and went on to win 25-23.

 

Game two saw the Chargers in control as they lead by as many as six throughout the set. Golden West closed within two (23-21), but Cypress was able to finish out the game and win 25-22.

 

Golden West was in the driver seat in game three, leading by as many as four points, but Cypress tied the game at nine all after a tip by Taylor. The Chargers would take the lead, but Golden West would use a 6-0 run to retake the lead. Cypress didn't back down and after trailing by as many as four points, tied the game at 19. Both teams traded leads and side outs, but Golden West was able to pull out a game three victory, 28-26.

 

With the fourth game tied at seven, the Chargers would go on an 11-3 run to lead 18-10. Cypress maintained its lead and eventually won by 11 points (25-14) to claim the victory over Golden West.

 

Cypress will hit the road for its next two games – traveling to Riverside on Wednesday, Oct. 15 (6:00 pm) and Irvine Valley on Friday, Oct. 17 (6:00 pm), before returning home on Wednesday, Oct. 22 to face Saddleback.
